Cheese Straws

A crowd pleasing snack for the dinner party or back yard barbeque.

Serves: Makes 48 - 60 Straws

Cooking Time: 45 Minutes

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups plain flour

100g butter, cut into small squares

½ cup finely grated Bega Extra Tasty Natural Cheese

3 tablespoons parmesan cheese

1 egg

1 tablespoon water

Topping

Beaten egg

Season All Spice mix

Extra parmesan cheese

Method:

  1. Sift flour into a bowl. Rub in butter to resemble fine breadcrumbs. Mix in egg, the cheeses and water thoroughly to make a firm dough.
  2. Knead on lightly floured board until smooth. Roll out to a roughly shaped large square. Trim to a 20cm square and cut in half horizontally. Brush with egg, sprinkle over Season All Spice and parmesan cheese.
  3. Using a sharp knife, cut into 1cm wide x 10cm long sticks. Lift onto flat oven tray, bake at 200C for 8-10 minutes until straw coloured. Cool slightly then remove carefully onto a wire rack. Repeat procedure until all the pastry is used.
  4. Serve with crudite, Bega Natural Cheese and savoury dips.
